LetterBugs is an art project by designer and artist Bill Moran. Starting on Sunday 12 September, the Tipoteca Gallery will be hosting an exhibition of these “typographic creatures” in an imaginary dialogue with the children’s books on display in the showcases.

The inspiration for this unique animal world are typefaces, the tools of the typographer’s trade. As historian and critic Steve Heller has written, “for centuries typographers, designers and artists have skilfully created anthropomorphic characters and animals with letters, using metal, wood, photos and digital typefaces in playful ways.” Bill wanted to combine two great passions in an artistic form, too: the aesthetics of typefaces and the rich biodiversity of the insect world, both of which play a leading role in their respective ‘kingdoms’, the world of letters and the world of animals.

The artworks exhibited in the Tipoteca compose a significant retrospective of Bill Moran’s artistic research, including prints made for the occasion of the Cornuda exhibition.
Each LetterBug is hand set and printed from movable type, and sometimes the artist chooses to add marks with brayers skillful handled. Making these prints is time-consuming and demanding, and for this reason the print run is extremely limited. Each work is unique and signed by the artist.

Bill Moran will join us for the opening day of the exhibition.

Bill Moran is a third-generation letterpress printer, graphic designer and Artistic Director emeritus of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He is a professor of typography and letterpress printing at the University of Minnesota, USA. Moran’s letterbugs have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe and are included in the permament collections of the Newberry Library, the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, and Tipoteca Italiana.
Each Letterbug print is hand-printed using lead and wood type with additional marks applied using ink brayers. The prints are labor intensive and therefore only offered in small editions. Each print is one-of-a-kind and signed by the artist. Visit Letterbugs.net to learn more.
