LetterBugs is an artistic project by typographer Bill Moran. Starting on Sunday 12 September, the Tipoteca Gallery will host an exhibition of these “typographic creatures”, in an imaginary dialogue with the children’s art books on display in the showcases.
The inspiration for this unique animal world comes from typefaces, the tools of the typographer’s trade.
As historian and critic Steve Heller wrote, “for centuries, typographers, designers and artists have skilfully created anthropomorphic characters and animals with letters, using metal, wood, photos and digital fonts in playful ways”. Bill also wanted to combine two great passions in an artistic form: the aesthetics of typefaces and the rich biodiversity of the insect world, both protagonists in their respective “kingdoms”, that of letters and that of animals.
The works on display at Tipoteca have been created for the occasion using metal and wooden typefaces from the museum’s archive.
Each LetterBug is composed and printed by hand using movable type, and sometimes the artist chooses to add marks made, again by hand, with ink brayers. The production of the prints requires time and effort, which is why their print run is extremely limited. Each work is unique and signed.
NB – The artist Bill Moran will be present on the opening day of the exhibition.
