Knowledge of nature and its applications in healthcare dates back to the earliest stages of human history and to humanity’s extraordinary ability to interpret the messages of the natural world. Over time, as civilisations developed, an extraordinary variety of remedies derived from the plant and animal kingdoms emerged, offering humanity an invaluable body of knowledge and a rich historical heritage that modern science cannot ignore.

As its subtitle suggests, the exhibition What Medicines Tell Us explores the language of healing through science, graphic design and communication. Every remedy has its own story, often accompanied by accounts of miraculous or extraordinary healings. Yet many of these remedies are also supported by scientific evidence, which has confirmed or disproved traditional beliefs. This ongoing dialogue between tradition and scientific inquiry has led to the discovery and development of medicines that remain essential to our well-being and continue to be dispensed through pharmacies today.

The exhibition, open until the end of July, examines a selection of remedies that have made a significant contribution to human health. Over the centuries, medicines have been promoted through a wide range of communication strategies involving artists, illustrators and designers. In this sense, medicines too have relied on effective graphic and communication practices to gain public trust in their efficacy.
